15 Behind-the-Scenes Photos of Movie Villains Looking Ridiculous

It’s hard to take a movie villain seriously after seeing them on a lunch break. Michael Myers apparently enjoys a soda, Leatherface has time for a card game, and Loki looks perfectly happy taking a nap. Of course, some villains have a harder time maintaining their image than others. Thanos spends his working hours in a motion-capture suit, while the Predator has an entire crew hanging around between scenes. Luckily, someone was there with a camera to catch these moments. The resulting photos are a pretty funny reminder that even Hollywood’s scariest characters have perfectly ordinary days at work. Here are 15 behind-the-scenes pictures that make movie villains look a lot less threatening. Darth Maul Has a Surprisingly Friendly Smile Ray Park looks considerably less threatening between takes of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Thanos Looks Like He Forgot His Supervillain Costume Josh Brolin’s motion-capture outfit makes the universe’s most powerful villain look wonderfully ordinary before the visual effects turn him into Thanos. Pennywise Is Just Hanging Out With the Kid Bill Skarsgård appears in full Pennywise makeup during a break from filming It, a much friendlier sight than anything the clown does in the movie. Freddy Krueger Needed Some Practical Effects A behind-the-scenes photograph from A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors shows the enormous Freddy Krueger prop used for one of the film’s elaborate dream sequences. Even the Predator Posed for Group Photos Kevin Peter Hall stands in full Predator costume alongside director John McTiernan and members of the crew during a surprisingly casual moment on the set. The Shark From Jaws Had a Maintenance Crew The mechanical shark from Jaws looks rather less convincing when photographed out of the water, surrounded by the people responsible for keeping the famously troublesome prop working. The Joker Had an Entire Camera Crew Watching Him Heath Ledger’s Joker looks familiar in a behind-the-scenes photograph from The Dark Knight, although the filmmaking equipment and crew standing nearby rather spoil his mysterious image. The Feral Predator Got a Behind-the-Scenes Makeover Photographs from Prey reveal the practical costume and makeup work behind the Feral Predator, with crew members attending to the alien’s appearance between scenes. Chucky Was Surrounded by Grown-Ups A behind-the-scenes photograph from Child’s Play shows the work involved in bringing Chucky to life, with the sinister little doll looking decidedly less independent off-camera. Leatherface Took a Break to Play Cards Leatherface and his murderous family look surprisingly relaxed playing cards together between takes of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, with their usual terrifying behavior temporarily replaced by a friendly game. Davy Jones Looked Nothing Like a Sea Monster Before the CGI tentacles were added, Bill Nighy performed as Davy Jones in a motion-capture suit for Pirates of the Caribbean, looking nothing like the terrifying captain audiences eventually saw. Even Loki Needed a Nap Tom Hiddleston, Chris Hemsworth, and director Taika Waititi pose together as if taking a nap between scenes of Thor: Ragnarok, looking considerably less heroic than usual. Michael Myers Needed a Soda Break Even Michael Myers needs a refreshment. In this behind-the-scenes photo from Halloween, the actor holds a soda can against the mouth of his mask, pretending to take a sip. Hannibal Lecter Had a Much Less Frightening Side Seeing Anthony Hopkins outside the finished scenes of The Silence of the Lambs takes away some of Hannibal Lecter’s carefully cultivated menace. Agent Smith Wasn’t Always in Control Hugo Weaving’s Agent Smith looks considerably more human when the cameras aren’t rolling, without the visual tricks that give The Matrix its intimidating digital world.
